Creating Dimension with Paint
Dimension is when
you add other colors to your painting to get rid
of the "flattness" you see when painting with just one color.
When creating dimension with paint the use of at least three
colors is essential:
One main color and one to each side.
In other words, you will need a dark, a medium and a light.
A fourth color will then give the viewer the idea that there
is light coming from somewhere and shining on the objects
in your painting.
If, for example, you are creating a leaf, you will need to
basecoat with a medium green, shade with a dark green and highlight with a light green. To then develop the illusion of a light
source you will brighten with a white or soft yellow.
This will create a 3D leaf rather than a flat one.
